Baldwin: A Letter to my Nephew

Baldwin: A Letter to My Nephew, a delightful dance theater experience – a living tribute to men globally. Inspired by James Baldwin’s timeless wisdom and literary essays, this expressive performance transcends boundaries to touch the community’s soul. Five dynamic performers embody Baldwin’s words through Artistic Director Germaul Barnes’s contemporary choreography, bridging connections across generations and fostering impactful community conversation for healing and restoration. The audience will witness acts of resilience, compassion, dignity, joy, and hope through dance. This two-night premiere engagement at the Dorothy Jemison Day (DJD) Theater on June 13th and June 14th includes post-performance conversations with the cast and collaborators, continuing Baldwin’s call to engage deeply with truth and empathy in pursuit of universal understanding.

“For these are all our children, we will all profit by or pay for what they become.” – James Baldwin

In Germaul Barnes’s Words: “This work is deeply personal. Baldwin: A Letter to My Nephew is not just a performance – it is a love letter, a reflection, and a reckoning. As a Black male artist, I often return to Baldwin’s words for clarity and courage. His letter reminded me that art must bear witness and offer vision. I sought to create space for reflection, joy, vulnerability, and truth in this piece. I asked each performer to bring their full selves to the process: their lived experiences, questions and hopes. The result is a layered conversation between movement and message, past and present. May this work open hearts, ignite dialogue, and remind us of our shared humanity.” – Germaul Barnes
